Premiers of Canadian provinces, mayors of cities and other leaders from across the country will join over 80 Indo-Canadian organisations for a major “oxygen” fundraiser next Sunday for procuring and sending critical equipment required in India to combat the raging Covid-19 crisis there.
The virtual fund-raiser will be held on May 16 and among those who have confirmed their participation are the premiers of the provinces of Ontario and Saskatchewan, Doug Ford and Scott Moe, respectively. Also on board are the mayors of Brampton and Mississauga, Patrick Brown and Bonnie Crombie.
A Toronto non-profit organization that promotes trade between Canada and India says it has raised $440,220 to send oxygen to India “in all shapes and forms” as the country fights a deadly wave of COVID-19.
The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) has begun to hold virtual fundraisers called “Oxygen for India” on Sundays. Its goal is to raise $2 million. Its first event was on Sunday and a total of $88,220 was raised between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. It will hold three more virtual fundraising events, with the final one on June 6.
The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC), along with 80-odd community bodies, launched its ‘Oxygen for India marathon fundraiser to collect $2 million to send oxygen equipment to India, even as Ontario announced to send 2,000 more ventilators to the Covid-battered country.
Surprisingly, the biggest contribution of $50,000 came from Canada’s native or indigenous Metis people. “We have similarities with Indians even though we are from different parts of the world. India will be there for us when we need, and we should be there for them now.
Manitoba Metis Federation, which is the government of the indigenous people, has announced a donation of over ₹30 lakhs to help India. More assistance related to the coronavirus crisis in India is flowing from Canada, including a donation from an indigenous community in the western province of Manitoba.

The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce, along with 82 other community organisations, has collected 440,220 Canadian dollars (Rs 2.66 crore) to send oxygen concentrators to India, which is in the grip of a deadly second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The charity drive by the ICCC will be held for three hours on Sunday for the next four weeks. The ICCC said the oxygen supplies would be sent to tier II and tier III cities in India.
